Are foreign diplomas accepted? Acceptance of a foreign degree is required in many occupations. If your profession is not regulated in Switzerland, you can practice it even if your diploma or certificate is not recognised here. If your profession is regulated in Switzerland, your foreign diploma or certification will have to be approved by a Swiss public authority or institution. What should I do if I lose my job? In Switzerland, all employees are compulsorily insured against unemployment. If you have been made redundant, you must look for a new job within the period of notice. If you cannot find a job, you are entitled to unemployment benefit. However, you must have worked for at least twelve months in the last two years. If you have resigned from the job yourself or if you have given the employer cause to be made redundant (so-called self-inflicted unemployment), you must expect a temporary suspension of your entitlement to unemployment benefits. If you are threatened with unemployment, you should register personally with the Regional Employment Centre (RAV) at your place of residence as early as possible, but no later than on the first day of unemployment. The RAV is the link between the unemployed and the unemployment insurance funds. It informs you about the amount and duration of the unemployment benefit. The RAV also finds jobs and advises you on further training courses and employment programmes. Undeclared work: anyone who is remunerated for legal work without being registered with the social security, tax administration and/or immigration authorities is working undeclared and is liable to prosecution.

Who needs a work permit in Switzerland? Employees from EU/EFTA countries currently have easier access to the Swiss labour market.
